I get asked all the time about what advise I would give to a writer. Truth be told, when I tell people I write, about 80 percent of them tell me an idea of a story they have always wanted to write. I can't tell someone who writes outside of my genre exactly what they may want to hear. The only thing I can tell them is to write, write, write! But, for those who write Christian - whether it be poetry, fiction or non-fiction this is my advise:
Dig deep into your faith. Make everything that comes from your fingertips to the page bring honor to God. After all, if you're trying to make a name for yourself as a true Christian writer, writing anything other than that which brings God glory takes away from making your mark as a Christian writer.
Digging deep into my own faith when writing has helped me to grow in my faith. It leads me to ask questions and search out the answers to the questions. Where do I go to search out the answers? I go to God's Word. I perfer the King James version of the Bible, but I also use the amplified King James.
Many times when I am writing, I am struggling with my own battles. That's a lot of my inspiration for what I write about. I try to keep what I write about real - from the heart. Anything less than that and the reader will see right through it.
I must say that opening myself up was a bit un-nerving - especially when I first started writing. It made me feel vunerable and open to ridicule. But, I have learned that if I am writing about God and how I see Him, that I have to write from within my own heart and faith. So, I guess when you read my words, you get a glimpse of my heart for God.
That brings me to the part about honoring God in everything you write. I am convienced if you bring glory to God and honor Him in all your words, that He will honor you in return. I always pray that what I write brings a smile, brings hope, or inspires others to search for themselves for their own answers. But, more importantly than that - that it brings and smile to the face of God and touches His heart.
